On a household outlet: 1/8 in rods on steel up to about 3/16-1/4 in, plus countless tacks and repairs on thinner stock - fences, brackets, implements, trailers. It is the lowest-cost real arc-welding entry.

A 15-20A household circuit handles a 120-amp-class machine at normal duty. Avoid sharing the circuit with a compressor; if the breaker trips at max amps, work at 90-110 amps or move to a 20A circuit.

Flux core feeds wire continuously and is easier on thin metal; stick is cheaper per weld, better on dirty or thick steel, and the rods are indestructible in storage. Both learn in an afternoon - many Simder machines do both.

E6013 for clean general work and easy strikes, E6011 for rusty or painted metal, and E7018 where stronger, prettier welds matter - all in 1/16 or 5/64-3/32 in for 110V machines.
